Exploring Fraser Island on a 4×4 gives you a unique experience driving up the coastal beaches and getting ferries.
Sunshine Coast Essentials
Accommodation: Hostel – not one for comfort but cheap and cheerful.
Itenary: Sunshine Coast, Frasers Island Day Trip
Duration: 2 nights
Shoulda Woulda Coulda: We passed through Noosa and it looked pretty amazing. Would have liked to spend a day or 2 there. Could have stayed in a nicer place if weren’t doing the tour.
Sunshine Coast
Next day after our Gold Coast trip we drove up to Mooloolaba in the Sunshine Coast where we stayed in a hostel which was $140 for a double room for 2 nights but I probably would have paid more for some aircon.

The hostel was clean and there was zero noise at night so overall happy with it. Also, the hostel provided free Sup boards, kayaks and a BBQ on Saturday evenings.
Accommodation Sunshine Coast
Half of the group stayed in cottage up in the forest which was about 30min drive only moderately more expensive ($420 for 2 nights) and had aircon but the reason we choose the hostel was that we were gone at 5 am on a tour to Fraser Island.
Sunshine Coast – Probably because it was the Christmas holiday season but there were very little options in terms of food and drinking in Sunshine Coast. We went to an Irish bar but it was more like a dive bar than anything else.
Fraser Island Day Trip
The Fraser Island tour was action-packed day tour all within the constraints of a 4×4 bus tour. We left at 5.30am and got back at 6pm.

We drove up the coastal road to Noosa then got a rope pulled ferry across a small river to the beach and drove up to Rainbow beach from there.

The beach was like a highway with 4x4s going up and don and several campsites in the dunes overlooking the makeshift road.
Things to do Frasers Island
When we got to Fraser island our friendly driver highlighted the dangers of dingos, sharks, snakes, 4x4s going too fast basically we were going to be lucky to survive the day trip.
His Queensland dry humour wasn’t lost on us, we found him hilarious with his ridiculous detailed stories.
Fraser Island itself is an island completely made out of the sand and has rainwater lakes, it’s not small either, the length is over 400km and you could easily spend a few days exploring it.
We got to go swimming in Lake Mckenzie which was crystal clear and one of the nicest swims I have ever had, it was more like a bath than a lake, so clean.
Frasers Island Rainforest
After we had lunch provided by the tour company we adventured into the rainforest. There was a trail that guides you through the tall trees and we got to see a rainwater stream which was so clear it was even hard to see.

Frasers Island day trip was amazing and 100% worth the trip.
